I laughed out loud at this meme today (even though a certain friend-in-the-know says it’s so last-year to LOL, I did it anyway!)…
(meme from Facebook)
Maybe all your “Tupperware” actually says “Cool Whip” on it. My mom’s leftover containers were all the white Hormel ham tins that used to come with plastic lids–I think she must have had twenty of them saved up.
But whatever you use, can you still find the lids to go with the containers? Even after tossing out all my old containers and buying new, it seems that within just a few weeks, there aren’t enough lids in the right sizes to go with the bottoms. And where do you keep them?
In my old house, I had a wonderful, deep drawer next to the fridge, perfect for “filing” my leftover containers, and for six years, we got along beautifully….
But then we moved, and somehow, stuff just doesn’t fit in a new place like it did in the old. The only place I could find in the new kitchen to stick the leftover containers (and still reach them) was a lower corner cupboard, and it often looked like this (not always — but the day I took the photo I was being brutally transparent):
So at my husband’s request, I ditched the plastic containers and invested in a few glass containers at the Corelle/Pyrex outlet, and I cleared out a shallow kitchen drawer to store them. While we don’t have as many containers here as I’d like, the truth is that if I need more than these, I probably have too many leftovers in the fridge and we need to make soup or have an end-of-the-week fridge-clean-out buffet supper.
I do still have a few zip-top bags for in-a-pinch, and they store easily in a drawer by the refrigerator, along with my bowl covers and bag ties:
And I’ve recently added a few awesome clips for closing frozen food bags, chip bags, bread bags, and more. (See product links at the bottom of the post.)
And we’ve tried to replace our plastic wrap and foil use as much as possible with silicone pan and lid covers:
I’d still love to do some rearranging, but for now, this is a tidier and more convenient solution than we’d had in this house.

UPDATE: Two and a half years later, my husband told me just this weekend that making this leftovers-container switch was one of the best organizational moves I’ve ever made. 🙂
